Animal rescue stories: tales from the street
At McKee we believe in having a long term view of animal welfare.
Truth is that every animal lover would prefer to spend his entire day engaging in dog and cat rescue, but, eventhough rescue is a very important component of promoting animal welfare, it really doesn't even put a dent in the immense tragedy of homeless pets.
Consider this: one unspayed female can jumpstart a breeding cycle that can place up to 67,000 new strays on the street during a 6 year breeding cycle.
That is 67,000 new stray dogs that will need to be rescued, fed, fixed, vaccinated and, hopefully, re-homed.
Out here, in developing nations, we simply do not have the resources to handle a problem of this magnitude.
Hence our focus on spay and neuter in order to stop the breeding first, so that we can eventually concentrate on re-homing the existing strays.
Does this mean that we are willing to overlook the sad cases, the ones that need assistance now? Of course not. Not one week goes by that we don't receive a call requesting help or that we don't walk by a stray in dire straits. Stopping and lending a helping hand is the right thing to do.
Often these stories have a happy ending, some times they do not. We choose to share the ones that encouraged us to stay the course, giving us hope for the future of strays the world over.
We hope that you will enjoy reading them as much as we enjoyed living them!
