General objective

To develop financial opportunities for McKee groups that wish to reach out to communities where spay & neuter clinics are desperately needed, but that lack the financial resources to implement such programs.

Specific objectives

Program description

The program is designed to build a “Seed fund” to help support McKee groups active in communities that lack the financial resources to start and maintain a spay & neuter program.  Many McKee volunteer groups are active in communities where people can afford the low cost of spay & neuter surgery, but the community itself lacks the resources to start the program in the first place.  Once the spay & neuter program has been established, McKee counselors work towards educating the public on the importance of taking a proactive role in supporting spay & neuter efforts from a financial point of view.  From local fund raising to charging even a nominal fee for the surgery, the community learns to independently sustain its own program and the program itself becomes an asset that the community can take pride in.

Data recorded by the McKee Project show that communities that could only cover about 38% of the cost of running a spay & neuter program during their first year, graduated to cover 100% of the cost after 3 years of running the same program.

Given the fact that no change had occurred in the socio-economic composition of the community, we can conclude that the improvement is the direct result of individuals learning to become responsible pet owners and taking an active part in shaping their community into becoming a more welcoming place for companion animals.
