Skin
Problems
I have found that vitamins and diet can do a lot, if you catch the
problem in time. I have a friend who adds flax seed oil to her pet's
(cats and dogs) food; she says it is a miracle. Also, A little oil
in the food, helps add a shine to the coat. Fish in the diet is fabulous.
I have noticed that the cats which hang around fishermen have the
most beautiful coats.
In Costa Rica, we have combinations of skin problems. It seems as
if mange and allergies are mixed. For many friend's companion animals,
and for lots of dogs from clinics in Flamingo Beach, Dona Judith's
paste has been used, and it worked. I have found that Dona Judith's
Skin Remedy*, with diet, and vitamins will work, when nothing else
works. This is an old remedy which is passed down in families.
Dona Judith's Skin Formula
Dona Judith's skin formula you can make yourself, and it is an external
skin remedy which works wonders and which is very inexpensive. It
costs about three dollars in Costa Rica and will last about two weeks,
depending on how often it is applied. It can be applied to open lesions,
problem spots, or bald areas. It may be applied daily, every other
day, or weekly. It is up to you to determine your animal's need.
The Paste:
Ingredients are in equal parts. You may make as much as you like and
keep it in a jar for daily or weekly applications:
- Powdered sulfur
- Zinc oxide
- Almond oil
This paste is light yellow and it smells delicious if you like almonds.
It doesn’t need refrigeration and keeps for quite a long time.
Oil in the food:
For the diet, you should add a teaspoon of cod liver oil with food,
until the problem clears.
Bathing:
If your animal has very dry skin, it is good to give them an egg cap
treatment.
Mix egg with a little olive oil and rub it on the animal (make enough
to cover the animal). Let it dry.
Then bathe your animal in Madero Negro: take the leaves and let them
sit until they turn into a tea type solution and bathe your pet with
this solution. Let it sit for about one half hour. Rinse. This also
gets rid of fleas naturally. It makes the hair soft and shinny.
* Dona Judith gives this recipe to all of us for free. I asked her
if she wanted to bottle it, sell it, and make some money (she is of
very limited resources), she declined. She says that enjoys seeing
animals get better. Her remedy, and care, saved one of my dogs, when
conventional medicine could not. Dona Judith is the First Mckee Delegado.
